Locked Out

Do not force the door. Call us and tell us two things. Is it only latched or fully deadlocked? And is a key broken inside it?

A look inside

How a lock works inside

A pin tumbler cylinder measures the cuts on your key. Select a part to see what it does.

Pins

Spring-loaded stacks of two. The bottom pin reads the cut on your key. The top pin blocks the plug until the join lines up.

Need us now

Lock problems never happen at a good time

The door closes with the keys still inside. A key snaps off in the lock. The latch stops working late at night. These are the calls we get most often.

It is a common problem with a clear process. Call us, describe the door, and we will tell you what happens next.

Homes

Very few doors here are the same

Walk a few streets in this part of Melbourne and you will pass a single-fronted cottage, a renovated terrace, a block of older flats, a new apartment building and a townhouse.

An 1890s front door and a 2019 apartment entry have little in common. Thicknesses differ, frames differ, and so do the cut-outs left by previous hardware. So we start with the door you have.

  • Repairs and replacements

Stiff keys, slow latches, and hardware that is worn past the point where tightening helps.

  • New locks and hardware

Handles, levers, cylinders and latches chosen to suit your door.

  • Key problems

Keys that will not turn, keys snapped inside a cylinder, and keys you cannot find.

  • A look at the whole property

Every external door, plus a clear opinion on which one is the weakest point.

Business

A shop door works far harder than a front door

Closers, latches, cylinders and strike plates on a trading door wear out much faster than they would on a house. And when one fails, it usually fails during business hours.

So the questions are different. Who needs access, and when? What happens to your trading day if this door stops working? Those questions have practical answers.

  • Offices, shops and small business

Doors where several people need daily access without a trick or a knack.

  • Property managers

Lock work across tenancies, so access changes cleanly between occupants.

  • Hardware rated for the load

Assessed against real daily traffic, so the repair lasts.

  • No unverified compliance claims

If you have a specific obligation, tell us and we will be clear about what we can do.

How it actually works

The lock is one part. The door is the rest.

Ask what makes a door secure and most people name the lock. But the lock sits in a door, the door hangs in a frame, and the building moves with the seasons.

So a good cylinder in a spread frame will not perform as expected. A modest lock in a sound, well-hung door often performs better. Security is an assembly of parts, not a single product.

How the door is used matters too. A door that gets pulled shut instead of locked. A side gate that is only bolted sometimes. We would rather point that out than sell you a heavier deadbolt.

No lock makes a property secure on its own. We will tell you what a piece of hardware is designed to do, and where its limits are.

What decides it

  • The lock

Cylinders, latches, deadbolts, handles and levers.

  • The door

Swelling, warping, dropped hinges and old cut-outs.

  • The frame

A bolt is only as strong as what it lands in.

  • How you use it

How the door is used day to day, not how it could be used.

  • Existing hardware

What you inherited, and whether it still works properly.

  • The layout

Which entry point is the weakest.

Three questions

Three questions worth asking

There is no score and no sales process. These three questions usually identify what actually needs doing.

01 — Access

This sounds simple, but it is where most problems start. Keys build up over the life of a property. A tenant, a tradesperson, a relative, a spare left with former neighbours. If you cannot account for every key, you do not know who can open the door.

Lock replacement

Worth checking

  • Every key to an external door is accounted for
  • Old tenant and tradesperson keys have been dealt with
  • The people who need access can get in without a knack

Common door types in Melbourne

What to check, by property type. No property type requires one particular lock. The door decides that.

Solid timber, many layers of paint, frames that have moved

Victorian

Original Victorian front doors are heavy, well made and usually painted many times over. Most have been rehung at least once. The original brass is often worth keeping if enough of the mechanism survives. We assess the door and frame together, because a century of movement changes how any hardware behaves.

  • Old cut-outs from previous hardware limit what will fit
  • The timber behind the strike plate matters as much as the lock
  • Keeping period brass depends on the mechanism, not the finish

Our process

Five steps, start to finish

  1. 01

    Call

Tell us what the door is doing and what changed.

  2. 02

    Look

We check the lock, the door and the frame together.

  3. 03

    Options

A clear explanation of what we would do, including doing less.

  4. 04

    Fix

The work you agreed to, and nothing extra.

  5. 05

    Test

We operate the door until we are sure it works properly.

How we work

01

Clear explanations

You will know what we are doing and why before we start.

02

Clean work

It is your home or business, not a worksite. We leave it as we found it.

03

Careful fitting

We work with the door you have, to fine tolerances, rather than forcing it.

04

Right-sized jobs

The work that fixes the problem, not the largest job we could sell.

This site does not publish guaranteed arrival times, award badges or years-in-business figures. We only state things you can verify.

Before and after

The difference is how it feels to use

Old and new hardware can look similar in a photo. The difference is in the hand. The key turns smoothly instead of grinding, and the bolt goes home first time.

This panel is reserved for real photos of our own completed work. Until we have them, one side shows a general hardware reference and the other is left blank.

Local

We are based on Malvern Road

Prahran is the street outside our door. It also fits a lot into a small area. Cottages, large renovated houses, older brick walk-up flats, new apartment buildings and a busy retail strip.

Every period left its own doors behind. Thicknesses differ, frames have shifted by different amounts, and old cut-outs limit what will fit. After two or three renovations, one building can carry hardware from four decades.

So we look before we recommend. An original timber entrance, an aluminium back door and a glass shopfront are three different problems.
